Oral Roberts University, or ORU for short, is a a private, Charismatic Christian, comprehensive university, located in Tulsa, which is the second largest city in the state of Oklahoma and the 46th-largest city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 386 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. It is the principal municipality of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has more than 900 000 residents, projected to reach one million between 2010 and 2012.
ORU was founded in 1963, by the Oral Roberts' Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association, and it is the largest Charismatic Christian university in the world. Since its founding, the university blossomed, having today an enrollment of approximately 3800 students, who come from 49 U.S. states, along with a significant number of international students from 70 countries. It is classified as Doctoral/Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and it is also ranked one of the "Best in the West" by The Princeton Review.
The university offers its students undergraduate programs in numerous fields of study, including music, business, theology, graphics, education and mathematical science, also offering a graduate seminary and fully accredited graduate programs in Business and Education.ORU is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a major distinction at the university being its high number of additional specialized program accreditations, especially for a university of its size.
ORU's athletic teams are known as the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, who compete in the NCAA Division I, the university being a member of The Summit League, in various sports, for both men and women, including cross country, basketball, tennis, soccer and golf, being, perhaps, best known for their achievements in men's basketball and baseball, the men's basketball team having three straight NCAA tournament appeareances, while the baseball team played in 21 NCAA regional tournaments, winning 12 conference championships in a row, also playing in 12 NCAA regional tournaments in a row.
